Speech and Language Evaluation
- Speech-language assessment is a complex process. Assessing, describing, and interpreting an individual’s communication ability requires the integration of a variety of information gathered in the evaluation process.
- A thorough assessment focuses on components known to accompany fluency disorders (e.g., affective, behavioral, cognitive, and others). Assessment is individualized and based on the person’s communication environment.
- An in clinic swallowing assessment will involve the oral preparatory, oral propulsive phases of mastication and swallowing. Various consistencies of liquids and solids will be presented in order to assess whether the client is able to safely transfer the bolus (amount of food) from the front of the mouth to the sides and ultimately to the base of the tongue to initiate a swallow.

During a 30-minute therapy session the client will be guided through therapy exercises and activities targeting goals in their treatment plan. If the session is with a pediatric patient, parent involvement is highly encouraged.
During a 50-minute therapy session the client will be guided through a protocol of therapy exercises and activities to target goals in his/her treatment plan. 50-minute sessions allow opportunities for intermittent breaks to engage in play and/or pragmatic development tasks.
